LIVERPOOL’S 2-0 WIN against Leeds in the EFL Cup quarter-final was pretty forgettable.

Forgettable for everybody except young Ben Woodburn.

At 17 years and 45 days, Woodburn smashed Liverpool’s second goal into the Kop end nine minutes from time and in doing so, became the youngest scorer in club history.

It took 76 minutes of a tame affair at Anfield before Divock Origi broke the deadlock but his contribution was quickly overshadowed by Woodburn, the academy youngster who came on as a second-half substitute.

After a lovely backheel by Sadio Mane, Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum combined to set up Woodburn unmarked at the back post.

His emphatic finish past Marco Silvestri eclipsed Michael Owen’s club record by 98 days and booked the Reds’ place in the last four.

– An earlier version of this story stated that Woodburn had beaten Owen’s club record by 100 days; as per Liverpool’s official statistics, it is 98 days.
