Belgium-Spain friendly called off amid security concerns

The pair had been due to meet in Brussels this evening.

BELGIUM’S FRIENDLY WITH Spain this evening, due to take place at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, has been called off because of security fears following Friday’s deadly attacks in Paris.

The announcement comes just days after 129 people lost their lives in a series of attacks in the French capital, one of which targeted the international friendly between France and Germany at the Stade de France.

The Belgian FA released a statement in the early hours of this morning to say it had cancelled the game following consultation with their Spanish equivalent and the reigning European champions flew back to Spain last night.

The statement said:

Taking into account the exceptional circumstances, we cannot take any security risk to our players and fans.”

It added that it “deeply regretted” the late decision to cancel the match and “understands the disappointment of many supporters”.
