Bastian Schweinsteiger has been hit with FA charge for Winston Reid incident

The German faces a three-match ban if found guilty.

MANCHESTER UNITED MIDFIELDER Bastian Schweinsteiger has been hit with a Football Association (FA) charge for an altercation with West Ham defender Winston Reid.

Saturdayโ€™s Premier League goalless draw at Old Trafford was overshadowed by the incident in which the Germany international appeared to strike the centre-back with his forearm.

Referee Mark Clattenburg and his assistants missed the altercation and the FA have subsequently opted to take retrospective action for an โ€œalleged act of violent conductโ€.

An FA statement read: โ€œBastian Schweinsteiger has been charged for an alleged act of violent conduct which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.

โ€œThe Manchester United midfielder was involved in an incident with West Ham Unitedโ€™s Winston Reid in the 40th minute of the game on Saturday 5 December 2015.

โ€œThe matter was referred to a panel of three former elite referees who each reviewed the video footage independently of one another to determine whether they considered it a sending-off offence.

โ€œFor an FA charge to follow the decision by the panel must be unanimous.โ€

Schweinsteigerโ€™s actions were criticised by both Reid and West Ham manager Slaven Bilic, who stated that the former Bayern Munich man should have been shown a red card.

โ€œHe deserved to be sent off, but itโ€™s impossible for the ref to see everything. No matter how many referees you have, sometimes they canโ€™t see,โ€ Bilic said in the aftermath of the game.

โ€œIโ€™m sure if he did see it, it would have been a straight red. Of course we are disappointed but it happens. He just didnโ€™t see it.โ€

Reid added: โ€œIt was a red card. He knows what heโ€™s done โ€“ heโ€™s elbowed me in the face. The referee couldnโ€™t see it, so we move on.โ€

Schweinsteiger has until midday on Thursday to reply to the charge and could face a three-match ban if found guilty.

Iโ€™m not going to lie. I saw it and I thought he was a goner.

Bloody hell. This is what United can do without. Missing key players for the next few games.

It wasnโ€™t an elbow , it was his forearm and more of a shove , Reid made a bit if meal of it , the law is the law and you cant raise your hand/ arm but donโ€™t think it requires a 3 match ban

It was more his intent than anything else, and FA did not do anything, would have played right into Mourinhoโ€ฆ.

Shouldโ€™ve been sent off. Strange thing is, Clattenburg surely mustโ€™ve seen it as he was 2 yards away from the incident and blew his whistle. For what?
