Corkman Hourihane leads Barnsley to the Championship with Wembley win over Millwall

The Tykes are back in English football’s second tier.

BARNSLEY ARE HEADING back to the Sky Bet Championship after a two-year stay in League One.

Captained by Corkman Conor Hourihane, the Tykes were 3-1 winners in today’s play-off final at Wembley against Millwall — who had Irish duo David Forde and Aiden O’Brien on the bench, the latter being introduced in the 43rd minute.

Barnsley — for whom Irish U21 international Aidan White was also among the substitutes — took just over a minute to go in front thanks to a superb Ashley Fletcher finish.

They doubled their lead in the 19th minute with another fine goal, this time a beautiful curling effort from Adam Hammill. Mark Beevers pulled a goal back for Millwall in the 34th minute but Lloyd Isgrogve sealed the win for Barnsley when he headed in Hourihane’s corner with 16 minutes remaining.

It was the 22nd assist of the season for Bandon native Hourihane, who has also scored 11 times for Barnsley in this campaign.
