FANS WHO MADE their way along to Dublin’s 3Arena last night certainly got value for money as British MMA organisation BAMMA returned for their second event on Irish shores.
BAMMA 24 featured 16 bouts, 12 of which ended inside the distance. The main event saw Welshman John Phillips crowned BAMMA’s middleweight champion as he upset the odds to deny France’s Cheick Kone a seventh consecutive victory.

Kone has been tipped as a likely candidate for a UFC contract but his hopes of that were dashed after just 65 seconds of last night’s headliner when Phillips secured a KO win.
Phillips, a former member of the Welsh commonwealth boxing team who recently moved to Straight Blast Gym to train under John Kavanagh, knocked Kone to the mat twice before finishing him off with a left hook.

Phillips’ triumph was the seventh and final win of the night for SBG: Chris Fields returned to winning ways with a first-round submission of late replacement Dan Konecke; Brian Moore needed less than three minutes to dispose of Mick Brennan via TKO; Peter Queally furthered his claims for a UFC call-up by taking his professional record to 8-2 with a unanimous-decision win against Nathan Jones, while Sinead Kavanagh edged out Zarah Fairn Dos Santos via split decision.
Two of John Kavanagh’s most highly-regarded young prospects also continued their progress. James Gallagher scored a first-round submission of Gerard Gilmore and Dylan Tuke overwhelmed Mark Andrew inside a minute, stopping his opponent with a clinical TKO.

Elsewhere, Paul Byrne was unable to get the better of Andy DeVent, Tom Duquesnoy continued to show why he’s one of MMA’s top prospects outside the UFC at Damien Ronney’s expense, and there were also big wins for Alan Philpott, Myles Price and Decky Dalton.
UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor, who’s currently in the US preparing for Saturday night’s clash with Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in Las Vegas, took to social media this morning to pay tribute to his SBG team-mates following last night’s bouts.
“My SBG brothers and sister ran a muck [sic] at Bamma this weekend!!!” said McGregor. “Congrats Peter Queally, Chris Fields, Dylan Tuke, Brian Moore, James Gallagher, Sinead Kavanagh on some really phenomenal wins! Some sweet KO’s and beautiful submissions!
“Congrats John Phillips also and hard luck Paul Byrne and Cian Cowley on his debut. Proud and motivated witnessing so many beautiful wins a week before I get to go again!
Congrats everyone! Onto the next one! Ready to represent my gym, my team and my country again in 7 days time!!!”
