MARIO BALOTELLI HAS thanked Liverpool fans from stopping his squabble with Manchester United’s Chris Smalling from escalating on Sunday.

The Italian, who had already been booked, could well have joined captain Steven Gerrard in seeing red had a number of the Anfield faithful not intervened to diffuse the situation.

And today the striker took to Facebook to tell those involved how much he appreciated the gesture:

“Besides all efforts the game didn’t go our way. But one thing was real clear: I wasn’t alone on the pitch. YNWA”
