As it happened: Augsburg v Liverpool, Europa League, last 32

Jurgen Klopp returned to his homeland for tonight’s European fixture.

GOOD EVENING! BOTH Manchester United and Tottenham are currently in action, while the Premier League’s third representative in the Europa League, Liverpool, are in Germany for an 8.05pm kick-off against Augsburg.

And here are the teams:

AUGSBURG: Hitz, Verhaegh, Janker, Klavan, Stafylidis, Kohr, Feulner, Esswein, Altintop, Werner, Bobadilla.

LIVERPOOL: Mignolet, Clyne, Toure, Sakho, Moreno, Henderson, Can, Milner, Coutinho, Firmino, Sturridge.

The two starting line-ups are making their way out onto the pitch. Augsburg’s stadium, the 25,000-capacity WWK Arena, is looking particularly impressive.

KICK-OFF – We’re off and running.

Augsburg Liverpool

Some early pressure from the home side and Paraguayan  striker Raúl Bobadilla shoots into the ground and wide. He’s got six goals in the competition this season.

CHANCE! A loose pass finds its way to Firmino and the Brazilian cuts inside but shoots tamely straight at Augsburg goalkeeper Marwin Hitz.

Reds skipper Henderson receives the ball 25 yards and has a pop at goal. The ball comes off a defender and is deflected behind for a corner. Milner delivers the set-piece and Hitz ends up with the ball in his hands after a header from Sturridge.

YELLOW CARD – Minutes after fouling Emre Can, Christophe Janker catches Mamadou Sakho late and earns himself the first booking of the night.

Free-kick to Augsburg. It’s a good 35 yards out from goal and Tobias Werner opts to cross into the danger area, where Toure makes the vital clearance.

Coutinho slips Sturridge in but a last-gasp challenge from the Augsburg defender allows Hitz to collect.

Meanwhile, Bobadilla is leaving the action. He has looked uncomfortable since feeling his hamstring in the opening minutes. Brazilian winger Cauiby is on in his place.

Someone in the office has just likened Werner to former Tyrone footballer Peter Canavan. Do you know what, that’s not a bad shout…

DECENT EFFORT! Can’s attempted flick is capitalised on by Kohr and his drive whistles past Mignolet’s post. Herr Klopp doesn’t look best pleased.

AND WE’RE BACK – The second half is underway.

YELLOW CARD – Kohr is cautioned for chopping down Firmino and Liverpool have a free-kick. Moreno crosses for Toure and Hitz has to prevent his own man from scoring.

JUST WIDE – A good passage of play sees Firmino and Milner play a one-two before the latter crosses for Sturridge who somehow missed the target.

Substitution – Daniel Sturridge, who has had a quiet night, is off with Belgian forward Divock Origi on in his place.

Augsburg attack down the right and Werner crosses to the back post where Moreno puts his goalkeeper in a bit of danger by heading back into the six-yard box. Mignolet scrambles back across and smothers.

Henderson’s shot lands on the top of the net, while Werner has been booked.

CHANGES ON EITHER SIDE – Werner is off for Ji Dong-Won, formerly of Sunderland and Jordan Ibe replaces Milner.

CLOSE! A cross is headed down into the path of Ji and the substitute clips the post with his shot.

Meanwhile, Altintop is off for Koo Ja-Cheol.

Full-time: Augsburg 0-0 Liverpool

Far from a classic but both clubs still have everything to play for in the return leg next Thursday.
