It only took them 437 days, but Aston Villa have finally won an away game

All hail Steve Bruce.

“WHAT’S IT LIKE to win away?”

Aston Villa fans had probably forgotten but last night, they watched through their fingers as their side beat Reading 2-1 — Villa’s first win on the road since August 2015.

That’s 437 days.

And it could hardly have been more dramatic.

With the game level at 1-1, and 90 minutes on the clock, Villa were awarded a penalty. Manager Steve Bruce turned his back, unable to watch, and Jordan Ayew slotted it into the bottom corner.

The win was only Villa’s second of the season but was enough to move them up to 17th, three points clear of the relegation zone.

Most impressive of all was the fact that, despite their appalling away form — and their appalling form in general — more than 4,000 Villa fans made the trip to the Madejski Stadium on a Tuesday night.
