ARSENE WENGER ENJOYED a 5-0 thrashing of Burnley in his final home game in charge of Arsenal after 22 years as manager on a day dominated by tributes to the Frenchman.
Both teams formed a guard of honour for Wenger, 68, before kick-off to a chorus of โthereโs only one Arsene Wenger.โ
All around a full house of 60,000 at the Emirates โ in stark contrast to recent league games when fans have stayed away in protest at a poor season โ fans sported red t-shirts emblazoned with โMerci Arseneโ (Thank you Arsene).
โI expect today will be dominated by sadness,โ wrote Wenger in his final programme notes.
โItโs the end of a long story for me at Arsenal. But I will also feel grateful for having led this club โ that I cherish so much โ for such a long time.โ
Wenger won three Premier Leagues and a record seven FA Cups. His crowning glory coming in the 2003/04 season when Arsenal won the league without losing a single game.
That โInvinciblesโ season was his last as a Premier League winner, though, and fans became tired of Arsenalโs inability to compete for Premier League and Champions League titles.
However, there was plenty for the supporters to shout about in a fitting farewell for Wenger as Arsenal displayed the attractive brand of attacking football that characterised his most successful sides over the past two decades.
Defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday means Arsenal missed out on Champions League qualification for the second consecutive season.
But they bounced back in style to secure the small consolation of ensuring they will finish sixth in the Premier League ahead of Burnley.
Wenger will wonder what might have been had Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang not been cup-tied for the latter stages of the Europa League as the Gabon striker took his tally to eight goals in 11 Premier League appearances since joining for a club record fee from Borussia Dortmund in January.
Aubameyang opened the scoring when he slid in to meet Alexandre Lacazetteโs cross to get a party atmosphere started after just 14 minutes.
Burnley have qualified for Europe for the first time in 51 years thanks to finishing seventh.
But it seemed incredible that only three points separated the sides before kick-off as Arsenal cut through the clarets at will going forward.
Lacazette stroked home Arsenalโs second just before half-time before Jack Wilshere teed up Sead Kolasinac for a third nine minutes after the break.
Aubameyang turned provider for Alex Iwobi to smash home the fourth after being given a huge amount of time inside the Burnley box to pick his spot.
And Aubameyang finished as he started by steering home Hector Bellerinโs cross to round off a five-star performance by the Gunners to send-off Wenger in style.
Wenger could even afford the luxury of also handing club captain Per Mertesacker an outing from the bench for the closing stages in his final home game before retiring at the end of the season.
And the margin of victory could even have been greater as Aubameyang unselfishly offered up the chance of a hat-trick by trying to square for Danny Welbeck, who just couldnโt reach his pass, before Welbeck rattled the crossbar.

Delighted for the lad! Would be great if in the future more young Irish players could come back for half a season play some LOI and go back with that bit of experience, seems to have done Eoghan no harm
Ambrose and boyata are both a liability, simunovic still an unknown quantity so Iโd say itโs a toss up between o Connell and kolo to partner sviatchenko.would be great to see eoghan nail down a regular spot and continue his progress
That is brilliant news for Celtic and Ireland.
I watched the match โ OโConnell showed great character throughout the game.
Canโt but read Rogers interview in his voice
Ladsโฆ. were ye watching a different game,,, he was 100% to blame for the goalโฆ. lost his man completely
Blueman, youโre right, the goal was his fault but his head didnโt go down after it as most young players would and he went from strength to strength as the game went on.
Itโs a zonal marking system, therefore no man to lose. Although he could have been better for it so could every other defender in the box and if Gordon stayed on his line maybe it wouldnโt have been a goal so 100% is very harsh on the the young fella. For a 20 y/o making his first European start in a notoriously tough place to go he done very little wrong and was one of Celtics better players. If you were watching the match and not just the goal you would have seen that!
O Connell did well all things taken into account, good result to take back to glasgow
Fact is the goal was his fault, you can dress it up anyway you want,โฆ football at the highest level is a harsh game, and goals decide games, if he wasnโt a young irish player playing for celtic , people wouldnโt be raving about his performance and making excuses for his defending for the goalโฆ think we need to take off the green white and gold glasses hereโฆ. and I did watch the full game
Blueman thereโs nobody bigging him up.if simunovic can be kept fit and playing regularly,o connell wonโt get much game time.at the moment heโs the pick of a bad bunch and just a potentially good defender
Blueman get a grip ffs. Heโs 20 years of age, made one or two small mistakes in the biggest game of his career to date. Start blaming the young man now and giving him abuse about the goal could shatter his confidence, thatโs why heโs being praised. Attitudes like yours is the reason a lot of talented youngsters donโt make it in the game!
Hahahaโฆ. one or two small mistakes???โฆ wouldnโt call losing his man for a goal in a champions lge game a small mistake. โฆ its quite a significant one. If young pros canโt take a bit of criticism they may as well forget about a career in the gameโฆ. and I thought he he will let a bit of criticism on the 42 get to himโฆ if he he was that type of character he would never have made it this far
You said people wouldnโt be raving about his performance if he wasnโt Irish or playing for Celtic. Well this is an Irish site and an article about Celtic, so obviously people who have a better understanding of the game than yourself (and people who really watched the game) think he merits praise for his performance! And if youโre a Celtic supporter you should be ashamed of yourself :-/
I am not a celtic fan โฆ I am looking at the gameโฆ which I watched in full from an unbiased point of viewโฆ itโd obvious your biased towards him, , and if u canโt see he was at fault for that goal than it is you who doesnโt really know that much about footballโฆ.
