Armagh account for Saffrons to go top, while Laois win to keep survival hopes intact

Donie Kingston’s nine-point haul helped Laois to victory.

KIERAN MCGEENEY’S ARMAGH moved a step closer to promotion with a 1-12 to 0-13 victory over Antrim in a heated clash at the Athletic Grounds.

Antrim’s CJ McGourty had a late penalty saved by Armagh goalkeeper Blaine Hughes and the Orchard hung to take the two points.

Antrim duo Conor Murray and Stephen Beatty were red-carded late on, as was Armagh’s Stephen Sheridan in a bad tempered finish to the game.

Armagh’s Ciaran McKeever netted a goal in his new role at full-forward, leaving the sides level at 1-3 to 0-6 at the interval.

Five scores without reply saw Armagh press into a commanding lead, but Antrim showed their reliance by getting back to within striking distance before McGourty’s late miss from the spot-kick.

Elsewhere in the third tier, Laois gained a valuable win over Longford in O’Moore Park.

Donie Kingston led the way with 0-9, while David Conway scored the game’s critical goal midway through the second-half.

Laois led by 0-8 to 0-6 at half-time against a Longford outfit inspired by Robbie Smyth’s seven-point haul.

Conway’s goal was followed up with a score from Alan Farrell to leave Laois five in front, but a red card for Evan O’Carroll set-up a nervy finish.
