Anthony Foley's funeral to be held in Killaloe on Friday

The Irish and Munster rugby legend died of acute pulmonary oedema caused by heart disease, the coroner’s report concluded.

ANTHONY FOLEY WILL be laid to rest in Killaloe on Friday morning.

The Irish and Munster rugby legend’s remains will be flown home to Shannon Airport tomorrow, from where they will be brought to his family home in Co. Clare.

They will lie in repose at St Flannan’s Church, Killaloe from 1pm to 8.30pm on Thursday evening.

Foley’s funeral mass will take place at 12pm midday on Friday at St Flannan’s Church. Burial afterwards will be at Relig Núa Cemetery.

The 42-year-old died suddenly in Paris on Sunday ahead of the province’s Champions Cup clash with Racing 92.

Foley died of an ‘acute pulmonary edema’, the coroner’s report concluded.

According to the autopsy, he ‘had a heart rhythm disorder that caused an acute pulmonary edema’, the Nanterre public prosecutor west of Paris told AFP.

Pulmonary edema is a build-up of fluid in the lungs that can lead to respiratory failure.

His death could therefore “be linked to a cardiac problem”, the prosecutor added, without giving any further details. Other toxicological analyses are under way, with results due in the coming weeks.

The prosecutor also issued a burial permit, with the body free to be released to the family.

The Foley family issued a heartrending statement yesterday expressing their gratitude for all the messages of support and condolences.

Members of the public wishing to pay their respects to Foley have been asked to visit the church as early as possible on Thursday.
