Anthony Foley remembered by BBC at the Sports Personality of the Year awards last night

Tributes also paid to the late Mark Farren and Ailish Sheehan by the broadcaster.

ON SATURDAY NIGHT, Anthony Foley was fittingly inducted into the RTÉ/Sport Ireland Hall of Fame as the Munster great was remembered in the wake of his tragic death last October.

Last night it was the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards that took centre stage and Foley was again remembered as the broadcaster paid tribute to some of those from the sporting world that sadly passed away in 2016.

Foley was not the only Irish sportsperson remembered.

Mark Farren, Derry City’s all-time top goalscorer, died last February at the age of 33 after a long battle with illnees.

While in September Ailish Sheehan, a World University rowing bronze medalist from Limerick, sadly passed away.

And the golfing pair of Christy O’Connor Junior – who passed last January – and Christy O’Connor Senior – who died in May – were also honoured.

World sporting greats like Johan Cruyff, Arnold Palmer and Carlos Alberto were others to feature.

Presenter Gary Lineker introduced the tribute video as Laura Wright and the Birmingham Community Gospel Choir performed David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’.
