Di Maria fined €2m and handed suspended jail sentence

The Argentina winger has admitted to two separate tax fraud offences during his time with Real Madrid.

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN winger Angel Di Maria will pay a fine of £1.76 million (€2m) to avoid spending time in prison after admitting to tax fraud.

The Argentine winger defrauded the Spanish government of £1.14m (€1.3m) during his time at Real Madrid, and will subsequently pay a 60 per cent fine on top of what is already owed.

Di Maria admitted to two counts of fraud, which hold six-month sentences each, but will not face any jail time.

A number of elite players have been accused of fraud in recent months, including Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.

Messi was similarly found guilty of evading tax on his image rights, and was handed a suspended 21-month prison sentence, along with his father, Jorge.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the latest player to find himself embroiled in such a controversy — he is alleged to have failed to pay €14.7m in image rights — leading to a saga over his future at Real Madrid.
