'United did not pay so much money for nothing' - Guardiola denies interest in Di Maria

The Bayern Munich boss is a huge admirer of the Argentine attacker, though.

PEP GUARDIOLA INSISTS Bayern Munich have no interest in signing Angel Di Maria from Manchester United this summer and says the ballooning fees involved in top transfers are “really crazy”.

Di Maria became the most expensive player in the history of British football when he arrived at Old Trafford from Real Madrid in a £59.7 million deal last year but has so far failed to live up to his lofty billing in the Premier League.

Problems adjusting to life in England and a failure to hold down a regular first-team place under Louis van Gaal have fuelled speculation linking Di Maria with a move elsewhere, though it is understood United would want to recoup most of their initial outlay in order to consider selling the Argentine.

And Guardiola insists that Bayern – who this week unveiled the signing of Brazilian playmaker Douglas Costa – are not looking to add Di Maria to an already formidably talented squad at the Allianz Arena.

I don’t have to watch Argentina games, because I know him and his style of playing very well,” Guardiola told reporters when asked about Di Maria.

“United did not pay so much money for nothing, he is a great player. Although such transfer fees are sometimes really crazy.” When asked if he was interested in signing Di Maria, the Spaniard replied: “No.”
