No title defence for Limerick's Andy Lee after opponent fails to make weight

Did Kid Chocolate eat too much of it over Easter?

ANDY LEE’S DEFENCE of his WBO Middleweight belt is now a non-title bout after his opponent Peter Qullin failed to make the weight on the eve of their fight in New York.

The American had until 8pm Irish time to shed 1.4 pounds after weighing-in at 161.4 pounds during the pre-fight weigh-in at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn but was unable to meet the limit.

The fight will still go ahead in the early hours of Sunday morning (1.30am Irish time) but Lee will retain the belt regardless of the result.

Quillan’s apologised to Lee tonight:

World Boxing Organisation regulations state: ”If the Champion makes the weight and the challenger fails to do so, the Champion, whether or not he loses the fight, shall retain the title.”

It’s the Limerick boxer’s first defence of the belt he won last December by beating Matt Korobov in Las Vegas.
