A European football legend has taken on his first managerial job

Andriy Shevchenko has a big job on his hands.

ANDRIY SHEVCHENKO has been appointed as the new Ukraine national team boss.

The 39-year-old, who is his country’s record goal scorer and the 2004 Ballon d’Or winner, had served as an assistant to Mykhaylo Fomenko since February and was part of the team’s coaching staff at a hugely disappointing Euro 2016 where they failed to score a goal or register a single point.

Shevchenko had previously been approached to take over as Ukraine manager in 2012 but declined the offer at the time as he felt he wasn’t ready.

The former Dynamo Kiev and AC Milan attacker, who spent three unsuccessful years in the Premier League with Chelsea, tried his hand at politics after retiring in 2012 but failed to win a seat in parliament.

He has signed a two-year deal with the Ukrainian football federation and his first competitive game in charge will come in a World Cup qualifier at home to Iceland on 5 September.

Croatia, Turkey, Finland and Kosovo also feature in Group I.
