Today Andrea Pirlo showed us why we all still love him, even if his country doesn't

The Italian midfielder conjured a moment of magic in Major League Soccer.

HE WAS IGNORED by his country regarding selection for Euro 2016 but today, Andrea Pirlo reminded us all of just how much he still has to offer.

His Major League Soccer adventure hasn’t exactly been the most enjoyable as his New York City FC side failed to qualify for the play-offs last season and struggled with a litany of losses in the early part of the current campaign.

Along with other Designated Players (those that fall outside the league’s salary cap) like David Villa and Frank Lampard, it just hasn’t gelled for the new franchise.

But, against the Philadelphia Union, all three got on the score-sheet.

Lampard, who’s paid a salary of $6m a year, opened the scoring on his first start of 2016 while Villa added a second later in the half.

But early in the second, Pirlo conjured a moment of magic to steal the headlines, expertly curling a delicious free-kick inside the near post.

It was his first ever goal in the league and what we’d all been waiting so patiently to see.
