Ireland international Alan Judge set for talks with Rafa Benitez's Newcastle

IRELAND INTERNATIONAL ALAN Judge could be set for a move to Newcastle.

According to Newcastle Chronicle reporter Lee Ryder, Brentford player Judge will undergo talks and potentially a medical at the Championship club today.

Judge’s current contract is up at the end of the season, so Brentford may be tempted to cash in on the 27-year-old now rather than risk losing him for next to nothing at the end of the campaign.

The Dubliner was particularly impressive last season with 15 goals and 11 assists. Indeed, since August 2014, he has more assists than any other Championship player, which is especially impressive given that he has been out of action since breaking his leg last April. Moreover, the injury did not prevent the midfielder from earning a nomination for Championship Player of the Year last season.

Judge’s fine form also saw him make his senior Ireland debut against Switzerland last March. He was a strong contender to make the 23-man Euro 2016 squad, before the leg break — from which he is now almost fully recovered — put paid to his hopes of featuring in France.

Judge has attracted Premier League interest in the past, but Newcastle would certainly be considered a move in the right direction.

Rafa Benitez’s side are the bookies’ favourites to earn promotion straight back to the Premier League this season. They suffered a shaky start that saw them lose their opening two games, but wins in their last two matches has brought them up to seventh in the table and suggests the Magpies are belatedly adjusting to Championship life.
