Preston's Alan Browne gets first senior call-up as O'Neill adds to Ireland squad

Cork midfielder to join Ireland training camp ahead of busy period.

ALAN BROWNE’S CLUB form has been rewarded with a first senior call-up for the Republic of Ireland’s summer triple-header.

The Cork midfielder will link up with Martin O’Neill’s extended squad when they begin their training camp in Fota Island Resort tomorrow.

O’Neill has been keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old’s progress with Preston North End since last year and made efforts to involve him in senior training sessions last March.

Injury prevented Browne from taking up the offer on that occasion but he will be part of the preparations for the upcoming friendlies against Mexico and Uruguay and the World Cup qualifier against Austria.

The Cork City graduate has previously represented Ireland at both U19 and U21 level, and made 31 appearances for Preston in the Championship this season.

His inclusion takes the number of players in O’Neill’s extended squad to 39, although the

three-day training camp in Fota will be limited to a much smaller number of players, mainly drawn from Championship clubs.

The full squad will link up in Dublin on Sunday before flying out to New Jersey on Monday ahead of Thursday’s meeting with Mexico in the MetLife Stadium.
