Dubliner AJ MacGinty landed a late drop-goal to give USA victory over Canada

It’s a long way from Blackrock to British Columbia, but MacGinty looked at home last night.

FORMER BLACKROCK COLLEGE schoolboy AJ MacGinty guided the US Eagles to a 15 – 13 victory over Canada in the Pacific Nations Cup fifth-place play-off in Vancouver last night.

The hosts, who will face Ireland first up in Pool D of the Rugby World Cup on September 19, took an early lead with the first of Liam Underwood’s three successful kicks at goal.

The third score from the Canadian out-half was a conversion to edge his side into a 13 – 12 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining after Nick Blevins’ storming run to the try-line after Jeff Hassler claimed the ball in the air and offloaded.

With Corkman John Quill also on the field, MacGinty would have the last say in the game, stepping back in to the pocket with 20 seconds remaining and slotting home a late drop-goal to add to his four first-half penalties.
