Munster won't be signing this Argentinian transfer target

Agustín Creevy has agreed to join Argentina’s new Super Rugby franchise next season.

MUNSTER WILL NOT be adding Agustín Creevy to their squad for next season after the international hooker agreed a contract with Argentina’s new Super Rugby franchise.

The southern province had identified the Argentina skipper as a primary transfer target ahead of the 2015/16 campaign, with hooker Damien Varley having been forced to retire through injury and Mike Sherry’s fitness still in doubt.

But Creevy, currently on the books at English Championship side Worcester, has opted against remaining in Europe next season and has instead signed with his native land’s first Super Rugby team.

The new franchise will join the competition in 2016 and Creevy’s signing is vital, particularly as he is the first player based outside of Argentina to be confirmed.

30-year-old Creevy had club spells with Montpellier, Clermont and Biarritz before joining Worcester in 2013, and has been in superb form as captain of Argentina for the past year or so.

His ball-handling skills, carrying dynamism, breakdown specialties and set-piece solidity would have made him an excellent addition for Munster, but they will have to look elsewhere now if they are still interested in bringing in a front-line hooker.

Sherry, Duncan Casey, Niall Scannell and Kevin O’Byrne are all contracted to Munster in the hooker position into next season, although Argentinian front row Eusebio Guinazu is currently scheduled to leave the province this summer.

Anthony Foley’s side yesterday announced the impressive signing of All Black and Blues centre Francis Saili, who will join on a two-year deal.
