Irish striker Rooney denied 22nd goal of the season by goal-line controversy

Aberdeen’s top goalscorer had the ball in the back of the net but it wasn’t given by the officials.

TWO GOALS INSIDE the first 10 minutes gave Aberdeen the springboard for a 3-0 Scottish Premiership win at 10-man Hamilton, but it was a goal not given that provided the main talking point from a routine win.

Derek McInnes’ side moved to within three points of leaders Celtic with victory but should have had the game won with a third goal by half-time. However, the officials failed to spot Adam Rooney’s effort had crossed the line — despite television replays showing it was well over.

Goal-line technology may have been introduced in the Premier League in recent years but it has yet to make its way to many other countries — including Scotland’s top flight.

Former Ireland U21 international Rooney has been in excellent form this season with 21 goals to his name already.
