After hitting 20 goals this season, Rooney hoping to catch Martin O'Neill's eye

The ex-Ireland U21 striker has played a major role in the Dons’ Scottish Premiership title challenge.

ABERDEEN STRIKER ADAM Rooney is determined to continue scoring goals in a bid to catch the attention of Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill.

The 26-year-old Dubliner hit his 20th goal in all competitions this season in Aberdeen’s 1-1 draw with St Johnstone last Friday and has admitted that it would be a “nice bonus” to earn a call-up to O’Neill’s squad.

“It would obviously be great to be involved with the national team but it’s more important to perform for my club first,” Rooney told The Press and Journal.

“I need to do as well as I can. As an attacker it’s all about scoring goals or if I’m wide it’s about setting them up. If it gets me recognised at international level that is a nice bonus.

But it depends on what the manager thinks. Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane have come in and they will have their own ideas on players and it’s up to them.

“I just have to keep focusing on doing well here and if anything comes on the back of me doing well then that’s great.”
