ABBY WAMBACH HAS announced her retirement from women’s football at the age of 35.
The US striker has scored more international goals than any other man or woman, racking up 184 across fourteen years as a member of the senior side.
In July, Wambach was part of the victorious team that won the Women’s World Cup – the first time the US had won the tournament since 1999.
She also claimed two Olympic gold medals during her career.
In 2012, she was named Fifa’s World Player of the Year, following the US success at the London Games.

To put Wambach’s statistics in context, from the 184 goals she has scored for her country, 77 have been with her head.
Those 77 headed goals would place her 7th on the goalscoring list alone.
Arguably her greatest moment came in the 2011 World Cup quarter-final against Brazil, when the US trailed with just moments left in injury time.
She planted Megan Rapinoe’s cross to the net and the US subsequently won on penalties.
Wambach isn’t done just yet.
She has four games left with the US team – part of their 10-game victory tour.
Her final match will be against China in New Orleans in mid-December.
