TODAY’S ANDY FARRELL news means the coach will almost certainly come up against his son Owen during a future Ireland-England encounter.
With that in mind, we’ve racked our brains to come up with other occasions when family members have come into opposition in sport…
1. The Redknapps
The Redknapps have crossed paths on more than one occasion, including when Harry’s Hammers won 3-0 against a Liverpool side featuring his son Jamie towards the end of the 1994-95 season.
2. The Nevilles
Gary and Phil Neville played together at Man United for many years, but there was no room for sentiment when the latter moved to Everton and they suddenly found themselves in opposition.

The Williams sisters have met in various tournaments on 27 occasions in total, with Serena triumphing on 16 occasions while Venus has won 11 times. Furthermore, Serena has won eight finals between the two compared to Serena’s four.
4. The Cunninghams
Back in April 2012, Aaron Cunningham lined out for Clare in a hurling league tie against an Offaly team coached by his father Alan. The bragging rights went to Aaron, particularly as he struck the winning point to seal a 2-14 to 0-19 success.

Jack and Bobby met a couple of times during their careers at Leeds and Man United respectively, and they are also the only brothers to play together on the winning team in a World Cup final.
6. The Schumachers
The only siblings to have won races in Formula One. Like effectively every other F1 driver, Ralf can’t compete with Michael’s incredible haul of seven F1 world titles.
Last year, Kieran Lillis captained Portlaoise to win the Laois final replay on Saturday 24 October and then won their Leinster opener against Carlow’s Palatine the following day. A great weekend for Kieran but the provincial match was a strange experience as his father Mick was at the helm of Palatine.
9. The O’Reillys
Last year’s Mayo county senior football final saw Eoghan O’Reilly part of the victorious Castlebar Mitchels team. But he couldn’t crow too much at home given his father Tom was a selector on the Breaffy side that were defeated 4-10 to 0-9 that day. To add further spice, Eoghan’s brother Tommy lined out for Breaffy.
