LIMERICK FOOTBALL CLUB will pay outstanding wages to its players today, but strike action may still be on the cards.

FAI officials met with representatives from the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division club yesterday evening to discuss the issue of non-payment over the past month.

“Following meetings with the FAI and the club over recent weeks, Limerick FC have this evening [Monday, 16 July] confirmed a resolution whereby the club’s players will receive monies owed to them by Tuesday [17 July],” the FAI’s statement read.

“The club have been informed that they will not be permitted to sign any new players for the remainder of the 2018 SSE Airtricity League season.

“The FAI will continue to work closely with the club to monitor their financial situation.”

However, while Limerick have been banned from signing players for the remainder of this season, the squad is meeting with SIPTU and the PFAI at midday today, when the possibility of balloting union members for strike action will be talked through.

“SIPTU representatives and those of our affiliate, the Professional Footballers Association of Ireland (PFAI), have been liaising closely with our members at Limerick FC,” said Denis Hynes, SIPTU Sport Sector Organiser.

It is a completely unacceptable situation that these players have been left without the wages due to them for several weeks.”

He added: “I will be discussing the situation with our members in Limerick FC and PFAI representatives. Following this we will consider balloting for industrial action, up to and including strike action. I have also written to the chairman of Limerick FC requesting an urgent meeting.”

It is worrying times for the Blues with several players departing in recent weeks, and only Bray Wanderers — another club caught up with financial problems — sit below them in the top flight at present.
