DERBY COUNTY ARE unlikely to sign Irish international Glenn Whelan, despite initially being linked with a move for the experienced midfielder, according to reports.
The 33-year-old Ireland international is expected to leave Stoke this summer. Despite having one year left on his current deal, Whelan is believed to be keen on a longer-term deal leading to interest from the Championship.
Moreover, with the Potters having signed Darren Fletcher this summer seemingly to take over Whelan’s position, the Dubliner’s chances to play first-team football are likely to be limited should he stick around next season.
Aston Villa have already reportedly had a £500,000 bid rejected for the £1 million-rated player, and Steve Bruce’s side are still understood to be keen on securing a deal for the former Man City youngster.
However, the Derby Telegraph report that any potential deal involving Whelan and the Rams is unlikely to happen, despite their promising midfielder Will Hughes joining Premier League outfit Watford on a five-year deal at the weekend.
Stoke City CEO Tony Scholes recently suggested Whelan was one of his club’s “best-ever signings”.
