Darren Clarke wants 'livewire' Jurgen Klopp to help Europe's Ryder Cup defence

The European captain also hopes Kenny Dalglish and Sir Alex Ferguson will speak to his team in the build-up.

DARREN CLARKE WANTS Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to help aid his team’s preparations for the Ryder Cup by delivering words of inspiration.

European captain Clarke, who is a big Liverpool fan, is currently knee-deep in preparation for the biennial event which takes place in Minnesota in September.

Sir Alex Ferguson famously spoke to Paul McGinley’s team at Gleneagles two years ago and now Clarke wants to follow suit by bringing Klopp in to rally his troops.

“Jurgen Klopp is definitely one of the guys I want to speak to, especially as a Liverpool fan myself,” Clarke said during a dinner with golf reporters in Florida last week.

“He’s an absolute livewire isn’t he? He’s a bundle of energy, and that sort of thing can be infectious. He’s obviously very passionate and a terrific motivator so I want to pick his brains a bit.

“Kenny Dalglish is someone else I’ll seek out, and Sir Alex Ferguson was such an inspirational figure at Gleneagles that I’d love to have him on board again..

“I’ll look into whether he’s free that week, and check out the possibility of flying him over with us.

“But I’ll be talking to a bunch of people over a whole range of sports. Clive Woodward is another guy who would be very interesting on the team dynamic and the former Ireland and Lions captain Paul O’Connell is another one.”

Clarke is back in Ireland this week for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open but his focus at the moment is very much on tracking the progress of players in with a chance of qualifying his 12-man team.

The Ryder Cup takes place at Hazeltine National Golf Club between 27 September and 2 October.
