Here's the man who will be the new Kilkenny senior hurling team captain

Shane Prendergast has been nominated by county champions Clara.

SHANE PRENDERGAST IS following in his father’s footsteps after being confirmed as Kilkenny’s senior hurling captain for the 2016 campaign.

The news was confirmed at a press conference at Nowlan Park this afternoon, with Prendergast taking over the role from Ballyhale Shamrocks player Joey Holden.

The corner back from county champions Clara made his National League debut for Kilkenny in 2014 but had to wait until last summer for his championship bow.

Prendergast replaced Jackie Tyrrell in the Leinster SHC semi-final rout of Wexford at Nowlan Park and came on again for the same player with 20 minutes left in the provincial final victory over Galway.

With Tyrrell ruled out through injury for the All-Ireland series, Prendergast made his first senior championship start against Waterford in the semi-final and at 29 years of age, lined out in his first All-Ireland final when the Cats beat Galway again.

Prendergast was then a key member of the Clara side that claimed county championship honours and he will hope to emulate Lester Ryan in 2014 by captaining Kilkenny to All-Ireland glory.

Shane’s father Paddy, a three-time All-Ireland senior medallist, was also a former Kilkenny senior hurling team captain back in 1987, when the Noresiders won the Leinster title.
