Stradbally won the Waterford SFC title tonight, will play Munster quarter-final tomorrow

No rest for the newly-crowned champions.

Stradbally 0-8
Ballinacourty 0-6

STRADBALLY ARE THE Waterford senior football champions for the first time since 2012 thanks to a two-point win over Ballinacourty this evening in Dungarvan.

The victory, which gives Stradbally their 17th title, comes on the back of defeats in the past two finals. It also gives the club a measure of revenge over Ballinacourty, who they lost to in the 2013 and 2011 deciders.

Stradbally won’t have time to savour their success, however, as they’re scheduled to be back in Dungarvan tomorrow evening at 7pm to face Cork champions Nemo Rangers in a Munster quarter-final.

Ballinacourty led by 0-2 to 0-1 at the midway point of the first-half of tonight’s final, but they could have been further ahead had Michael O’Halloran not failed to hit the target with a penalty.

But Stradbally kicked three points in succession — one from Shane Aherne and a brace from man-of-the-match Shane Lannon — to take a 0-4 to 0-2 lead in at the break.

A couple of points from Patrick Hurney brought Ballinacourty level in the second-half and the sides were deadlocked as the game approached the final whistle.

However, a point from Michael ‘Brick’ Walsh was followed by another in added time from Robert Aherne, as Stradbally snatched the victory at the death.
